Psalmus by Beatrice Nicholas
PSALMUS: A NEW WORK WRITTEN BY BEATRICE NICHOLAS.

Beatrice’s new work Psalmus for Cello and Harp connects the listener with the musical history of Nottinghamshire. By using original plainsong from Nottinghamshire's Wollaton Antiphonal, Beatrice has produced a musical dialogue between cello & harp that is both meditative and lifting. Central to the work is an ancient plainsong, commonly sung by Nottingham Parishioners in the Middle Ages as an introduction to Psalm 81. The first verse of Psalm 81 reads 'sing for joy to God our strength'. Or in the Passion Bible Translation 'Lord, just singing about you makes me strong!' Beatrice uses the cello to depict our human frailty, whilst the harp continuously interjects this narrative with a call to look up and worship God. The meditative piece explores the mystery of worship that, even in the midst of uncertain times, looking up to God will give us strength.
